Anya Mironets Keyes

She grew up in Soviet-era Ukraine before moving to the United States. She had long dreamed of becoming a painter, but eager to make it in a new country. Her work is a visual journal chronicling connection, intimacy, and loss. There’s a satisfaction from the precariousness of watercolor that she never found in other styles. Knowing the peril of a single false stroke has a way of focusing the mind, painting in a flow.

 

Despite its challenges, she chose watercolor for the nuance that you don’t find with less demanding mediums. It lets me focus on shadows, reflections, silhouettes, and capturing light from the real world onto paper.
