This new body of work, the Potty Mouth series, is based on the phenomenon of reduced pain through the act of swearing. For the last decade my artistic practice has centered on the things we carry—our experiences, identities, and traumas—and specifically how we persist and shine in spite of these visible and invisible burdens. My masked female portraits and lifeless feathered creatures depict this everyday defiance. Building on my work on trauma and times of turbulence Potty Mouth incorporates imagery of neon signs spelling out cuss words and sayings used in times of stress, exasperation, and pain.
“I’m interested in the things we carry—our experiences, identities, and traumas— and specifically how we persist in spite of these visible and invisible burdens. I am inspired by human—in particular women’s—resilience and adaptability. Your traumas make you more beautiful. Ultimately, my practice is about hope, resolve, and joy in the face of life’s obstacles.”
